Managing Student Behaviour

Our Objectives are to provide:

  • A learning environment that meets the needs of all students through monitoring and evaluating the school program so it retains balance , relevance and challenge;
  • A safe and inclusive environment And
  • To meet the physical needs of all students.

Students are guided to develop safe and responsible behaviour through class programs including Child Protection curriculum, Program Achi eve, explicit teaching of problem solving approaches, class meetings that provide opportunity for modelling respectful communication and cooperative decision making, etc.

All teachers establish a set of class rules and con sequences with students at the beginning of each year. This ensures a focus on care for self, o thers and property, building positive communication and respectful relationships. Class r ules are displayed prominently and revisited frequently to support ownership by all st udents and ensure clear understanding.

Responsible behaviour by students is recognised and encouraged:

  • In the classroom in the form of behaviour-specific feedback. Recognition includes notes home, special activities, stickers, stamps or certificates
  •  Through opportunities for whole school recognition given through awards at assemblies, reports in the newsletter etc.

Behaviour which contravenes class or school rules is viewed as an opportunity for the student’s personal development. Where students make inappropriate choices, consequences are applied to assist more appropriate decision making and learning.

Providing students with an early reminder to re-eng age with their task (“What is the task? I need to see you...”) assures an opportunity for them to take responsibility for their behaviour.

Consequences are applied with consistency and refle ct the frequency and severity of inappropriate behaviours. The school’s response to inappropriate behaviour follows the steps:

  1. Reminder – restate the rule that is not being followed
  2. 2nd warning – Clarification/counselling
  3. Classroom Time Out or Buddy Class
  4. Notification to Principal or Assistant Principal – a School Incident Report (SIR) is filled out and sent to the Office.*
  5. Student, teacher, parent (as appropriate) meet a nd reach agreement for return to class

[* Follow up meetings with teachers may be required to clarify the behaviour/incident and determine the most appropriate response. ]

Incidents of inappropriate behaviour in the yard and non-completion of work in class time are addressed through Time Out at lunch time. Parents a re notified of this process through School Incident Report.


A ‘common sense’ approach to yard incidents is requ ired by teachers on duty.

5 minute ‘time out’ or ‘rubbish duty’ reminders are common consequences for low level breaches of school rules.

A restorative approach to resolving conflict is use d successfully in most instances involving conflict between students.

Procedure for managing School Incident Report:

  • The WHITE copy of the SIR is placed immediately in the students’ diary, communication book or bag and is taken home by the student to be sighted and signed by parents/guardians and returned the follow ing day or as soon as possible. A decision may be made to post the slip home. The YEL LOW copy remains at the Front Office until the WHITE copy is signed.
  •  The School Leadership team will follow up late not ice returns and any appropriate consequences.
  • All SIR information is placed on EDSAS and shared with the School Counsellor. This information may also be used in making reports or r eferrals.

Alternative consequences for identified students may be negotiated with the Leadership team. Where necessary, Inter Agency referral may be requi red to assist in development of specific strategies for managing individual students’ behavi ours.

Behaviour of a violent or illegal nature, bullying or sexual/racist harassment, is immediately brought to the notice of the Principal or Assistant Principal and is dealt with in accordance with the ‘Suspension, Exclusion, Expulsion Guidelin es’ of DECS, at the discretion of the Principal.
